There were two new drivers in Belgium, Alexander Rossi (he only drove in FP1 – Rossi is the first American driver in F1 since Scott Speed in 2007) and André Lotterer (the German was a test driver for Jaguar in 2002) for the whole weekend. He started 21st on the grid and retired with mechanical problems on lap one of the race.
There were problems for Alonso before the warm-up lap as there were mechanics on the grid after the 15 second warning mark. The Spanish driver was punished with a five second stop-and-go penalty.
Hamilton took the lead and on lap two, the two Mercedes drivers collided (not a surprise – it was something very predictable since the beginning of the season). Nico Rosberg didn’t have any significant damage, but there was big trouble for Hamilton. He had a puncture and his race was ruined (he was forced to retire on lap 41 when he was only 16th).
It was another great race that was full of emotions. Ricciardo won for the third time this season, giving Red Bull their 50th victory in F1. Rosberg was second and now he leads Hamilton by 29 points. Bottas drove another wonderful race and finished in third – his fourth podium in the last five races.
Räikkönen was fourth – his best result of the season. Fifth place went to Vettel after an extraordinary fight with the two McLaren drivers – Magnussen in sixth and Button in seventh and Alonso finished in eighth. Pérez was ninth and Kvyat completed the top ten.
F1 will return to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix on 7th September and we all expect another great race!
P.S. Kevin Magnussen has been handed a 20-second time penalty by the stewards for forcing Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso off the road, which has demoted him down to 12th. This means Hülkenberg gets a point, and Button, Alonso, Pérez, and Kvyat won some further points
