A review of the Azerbaijan GP by Pedro Cunha

F1 2016 Azerbaijan GP.
Baku street circuit

On the streets of Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, Rosberg claimed the 25th pole of his career and the 60th for Mercedes.

Nico Rosberg

Hamilton made a series of errors, eventually hitting the wall in Q3 and had to settle for 10th place on the grid.

The big surprise was Pérez who managed to put his Force India in 2nd position (Force India has only one pole in its history – Fisichella in Belgium 2009), but ended up losing five places on the grid due to having changed the gearbox after one accident in the last free practice session.

Rosberg gave no chance to anyone in a race where Bottas achieved the highest top speed ever (378 kilometres per hour). The former record belonged to Montoya (372.6 kilometres per hour obtained in Italy in 2005).

Juan Pablo Montoya

Hamilton had to settle for 5th place, while Ferrari got 2nd place (Vettel) and 4th (Räikkönen), and Force India for the 3rd consecutive time managed to put their drivers in the points – Pérez was 3rd (his 2nd podium of the season) and Hülkenberg was 9th. It was a discreet race for Red Bull (Ricciardo was 7th and Verstappen 8th) and also for Williams (Bottas was 6th and Massa 10th).

There were 4 dropouts (Kvyat, Sainz, Wehrlein and Alonso, with Wehrlein quiting for the first time in his short career). After 8 races only 3 drivers have not retired: Ricciardo, Bottas and Pérez.

Within two weeks we will have the GP of Austria.
