Review of the Italian GP by Pedro Cunha

F1 2015 Italian GP.

Last weekend we had the Italian GP which has been part of the world championship series since “day one” – Monza has always hosted the race, only with one exception (1980 where the race took place at Imola).

Hamilton claimed his 11th pole of the season and victory number 7. His dominance was evident and he also benefited from the retirement of Rosberg with mechanical problems only with two laps to go, when he was in 3rd position. Hamilton is on his way to another title.

Lewis Hamilton.
Only with a few laps until the end of the race, Hamilton led
about 20 seconds ahead of Vettel when his engineer Peter Bonnington told him to increase the pace, “don’t ask questions, just execute”, adding: “We will explain later.”  “I can’t go much quicker,” Hamilton said. “What do I need to do?” – he was told to obey the order. Hamilton in fact increased the pace and ended up 25.042 seconds ahead of Vettel.

What happened? Mercedes was under investigation because of suspected irregularities in the tires pressure, which could lead to a penalty of 25 seconds or even to the disqualification of the team. At the end of the race, the stewards eventually decided that there was no irregularity.

As for the race, Räikkönen stood still on the starting grid (after a second place in qualifying) and when his Ferrari began to move he found himself in position 20, but a remarkable race allowed the Finnish driver to end up in 5th, while the Williams drivers got 3rd and 4th places (Massa and Bottas) respectively.

Force India achieved their best result of season with Pérez in the 6th and Hülkenberg in 7th.

Nico Hulkenberg.

Red Bull also scored with Ricciardo in 8th and Kvyat in 10th. Ericsson was 9th and scored 2 more points for Sauber.

A bad day for Lotus with its 2 drivers out of the race in the early stages (Maldonado has 8 retirements in 12 races, which is painful).

Lotus F1 Team.
For the rest no big surprises, McLaren and Manor did what they could…
