F1: The Lost Teams, Part 1: The Champions
Since the beginning of the world championship, more than 100 teams have already gone through F1. Many of them did nothing, but others are heritage. In this post, I will analyse the extinct teams that were champions of the world and in the next one, the teams that won at least one race without, however, having achieved the title.
The Constructors championship title was introduced in 1958 and to date, 15 teams managed to win it, 6 of them are still in business (Ferrari, Lotus, McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull and Williams)
Vanwall
The team was formed in the 50s by Tony Vandervell and aligned in 6 championships (1954 to 1958 and 1960) and was the first team to win the constructors championship in 1958. In its history, they participated in 66 races, managed to get 7 pole positions and 9 wins – 12 drivers drove for to the team (none of them were able to win the drivers title as a Vanwall driver), including names like Colin Chapman and Striling Moss.
Cooper
Their full name was Cooper Car Company and they participated in the F1 world championship between 1950 and 1969 (with the exception of 1951), and they started in 129 GPs. They won the World Constructors Championship in 1959 and 1960 and the drivers championship in those years by Jack Brabham. They got 11 poles and 16 victories, with several drivers lined by the team. Alfa Romeo, Masereti, Climax, Ferrari and Ford were some of the engines used by the team.
BRM
British Racing Motors participated in the F1 world championship between 1950 and 1977, and participated in 197 races, achieving 11 pole positions and 17 wins and the double championship in 1962 (constructors and drivers through Graham Hill). In addition to Hill, the team went through drivers such as Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart and John Surtees.
Brabham
One of the most mythical F1 teams – they were initially on the scene between 1962 and 1987, returned in 1989 and left in 1992 again. They participated in more than 400 races, where they managed 40 pole positions and 35 wins. They won the world constructors championship in 1966 and 1967, and the drivers championship for 4 times: 1966 (Jack Brabham), 1967 (Denny Hulme), and 1981 and 1983 (Nelson Piquet). About 80 drivers lined up for the team, which includes names like (apart from world champions) Jochen Rindt, Jacky Ickx, Graham Hill, Niki Lauda, Riccardo Patrese and Damon Hill. Climax, Cosworth, Repco, Alfa Romeo, BMW and Yamaha were some of their engine suppliers.
Matra
Between 1967 and 1972, the Mécanique Aviation Traction (Matra) took part in 61 races, having achieved 4 pole positions and 9 wins, having won the world constructors championship in 1969, as well as the drivers one (Jackie Stewart). In terms of engines as well as own engines, they were supplied by Ford.
Tyrrell
Another historical team: 14 poles, 23 wins in 430 races, and a long F1 life, between 1968 and 1998. They won the constructors title in 1971 and the drivers title in 1971 and 1973 (both by Jackie Stewart). About 50 drivers drove for the team (Jean Alesi, Jody Scheckter, Didier Pironi amongst others). They received engines from suppliers as Ford, Renault, Honda and Yamaha. The Tyrrell P34 (in 1976 and 1977) with its 6 wheels was one of the most amazing cars in F1 history.
Benetton
They participated in the world championship between 1986 and 2001, having won the constructors championship in 1995 and the drivers one in 1994 and 1995 (with Michael Schumacher taking both). They lined-up in 260 races and obtained 15 pole positions and 27 wins. Schumacher was their top driver, but drivers like Nelson Piquet, Gerhard Berger, Jenson Button (who were amongst others) also went through the team. Over time, BMW, Ford and Renault, provided engines to the team.
Renault
The French team over time has supplied engines to many teams (they currently provide to Red Bull and Toro Rosso), but as a constructor does not have a very long history: they lined-up in the world championship between 1977 and 1985, then between 2002 and 2010. In 303 races, they achieved 51 pole positions and 35 wins, having won the world championship in 2005 and 2006 (Alonso was also champion in those years). Men like Fernando Alonso, Alain Prost, Rene Arnoux, Giancarlo Fisichella drove for the team.
Brawn
They participated in a single world championship (2009) but won both titles and Jenson Button won the drivers championship. Equipped with Mercedes engines they got 4 pole positions and 8 wins.
