Review of the Belgian GP by Pedro Cunha

F1 2015 Belgian GP

Since the start of the F1 world championship, only 6 times the sport did not visit Belgium (1957, 1959, 1969, 1971, 2003 and 2006) – Spa is one of the most mythical circuits on the calendar and was almost always the chosen circuit (the exceptions were Nivelles in 1972 and 1974 and Zolder in 1973, 1975-1982 and 1984 – Today, the circuit is about 7 kilometers (the longest in F1 currently), but had more than 14 kilometers.

Mercedes dominated all weekend: Hamilton got his 10th pole of the year, his 6th victory and the team’s 7th one-two.

Lewis Hamilton

Qualifying was a disaster for Ferrari in what was the 900th race of the Maranello team in F1 – Vettel was 9th and Raikkonen 14th, but a good strategy (only one pit stop) seemed likely to secure the 3rd place for Vettel, but with only one lap to go, one of his tires exploded, causing the German driver to finish in 12th place. Räikkönen finished in 7th.

Sebastian Vettel

After the race, Vettel said that Pirelli tyres are bullshit - On Friday Rosberg also had a tyre blowout.

Grosjean claimed a 3rd place, the first podium for himself (and Lotus) since the US GP in 2013. Kvyat was 4th, Pérez 5th (his best result of the season), Williams returned to the points with Massa in 6th and Bottas in 9th. Verstappen was 8th and Ericsson completed the scoring places in 10th.

Although Honda has announced that McLaren would be better, in fact this was not confirmed, and the team, after having scored in the last 2 races, this race they weren´t able to score as Alonso was 13th and Button 14th.

Jenson Button

Manor continues to confirm that reliability does not rhyme with speed, but once again, their two drivers drove until the end. In fact, Stevens and Merhi retired only once this season.

Within two weeks, F1 will travel to Italy.

Current Standings:

Drivers: Hamilton (227), Rosberg (199), Vettel (160), Räikkönen and Massa (82)

Teams: Mercedes (426), Ferrari (242), Williams (161), Red Bull (108), Lotus (50)
