A Review of The Abu Dhabi GP by Pedro Cunha

At the age of 31 and in his 11th season as an F1 driver, Nico Rosberg is finally world champion achieving a rare feat: following in the footsteps of his father Keke, who had won the title in 1982.

Previously, only the Hills had accomplished this (Graham in 1962 and 1968 and Damon in 1996). Rosberg is the 3rd German (and the 33rd driver) to win the title after Schumacher (7 titles) and Vettel (4 titles) – I remember that although Rosberg is German his father is Finnish.

On the island of Yas (Abu Dhabi), in a race that starts during the day and ends during the night, Hamilton got his 61st pole (6 in a row) knowing that even if he won, he would only be world champion if Rosberg got off the podium, something that did not happen.
In a very well-contested race, Hamilton won, Rosberg was 2nd (0.439 seconds behind Hamilton, Vettel was 3rd (0.843 seconds behind the winner). Verstappen in 4th was 1.685 seconds behind the English driver. Ricciardo was 5th, Räikkönen 6th, followed by the two Force India drivers (Hülkenberg in 7th and Perez in 8th). Massa was 9th (a nice race to say “goodbye”) and Alonso was 10th.

Magnussen, Bottas, Button, Kvyat and Sainz did not complete the race.

This race was the last one for 3 people:

Jenson Button – At the age of 36, he has left F1 after taking part in the last 17 world championships (8 poles, 15 wins and 50 podiums in 310 races (he started 305), and having been world champion in 2009.

Felipe Massa – At the age of 35, he has left F1 after taking part in the last 15 seasons, (16 poles, 11 wins and 41 podiums in 252 races (he started 250) and having been the runner-up in 2008.

Ron Dennis – At the age of 69, he will no longer be Mclaren´s “big boss”, a position which he had occupied since 1981, but will remain part of the team’s structure since he owns 25%. In the last 35 years, Dennis has won 10 driver titles (Prost and Senna with 3 titles each, Häkkinen with 2 and Lauda and Hamilton with 1) and 7 constructors championships.
