Magnussen’s Renault caught fire during FP1 in Malaysia but fortunately no one was hurt.
Hamilton claimed another pole. At the start of the race, Vettel and Rosberg were involved in an accident. The Ferrari driver left the race and Rosberg after a spin, dropped to position 21 as the virtual safety car (VSC) was deployed for the first time. On lap 9, Grosjean was forced to retire due to a failure on his brakes, and for the second time, the VSC was deployed. The 3rd time the VSC was deployed occurred on lap 41. Hamilton was quietly leading the race but he was forced to retire with engine problems.
Magnussen had a bad weekend, Gutierrez and Nasr also did not finish.
It was a glorious day for Red Bull. Ricciardo won the race (his first win since the Belgian Grand Prix in 2014) and Verstappen was 2nd – the last “one-two” for the team happened in Brazil in 2013.
After all not a bad day for Rosberg. A 3rd place after a painful start and a 10 seconds penalty after causing a collision while overtaking Räikkönen, who was 4th.
Bottas was 5th, but not enough to put Williams ahead of Force India in the constructors, as Pérez was 6th and Hülkenberg 8th.
Alonso had a remarkable race. He was 7th after starting the race in 22nd place. Button was 9th (in what was his race No. 300 – only Barrichello (322) and Schumacher (306) started more races).
Palmer scored the first point of his career after placing his Renault in 10th.
